Kopi Nako: From Rice Stall into Dozen Branches of Coffee Shop

There are some Indonesian coffee brands that survived nowadays. One of them is Kopi Nako. In less than ten years, Kopi Nako has dozens of branches in Indonesia. Luckily, one of the branches was near my old house at Pondok Aren, Tangerang Selatan, Banten.

Since I like to hangout and drink coffee, come to café like Kopi Nako is a must. I knew they will build Kopi Nako because the building is unique, full of glass and mostly outdoors. Almost in every branch, you will see the same building façade.

I like to come at morning or night because it is really hot in afternoon. I like their coffee late and wedang jahe if I want some warm. When I want something fresh, I order mango lassie. It is yoghurt with mango and some secret ingredients. I like the sweet and sour of the drink.

My children like to come here because they have ice cream on the menu. We also like to order the snacks like cheese potato. They also served rice with many dishes, but I have not tried yet.

In fact, the first outlet of Kopi Nako is a rice stall. The owner, Jayadi Budiman and his partners, opened a warung nasi (rice stall) with various side dishes. Customer will eat rice and choose side dishes and vegetables.

Their main menu are rice and coffee. In Indonesia we called ‘nasi’ and ‘kopi’. That’s become the name of the brand ‘NaKo’ (Nasi-Kopi). Later, the owner realized that selling coffee can be easier to develop than selling rice. He bought the building beside the rice stall and make a coffee shop like today.

On the other hand, ‘nako’ also means glass window. Therefore, the building is full of glass. They also provide wi-fi and many plugs. The target market are the young people who like to work, study, or hangout at café.

They open the first café at Pajajaran, Bogor and currently spread all over Indonesia.
