Tauco Cap Meong from Cianjur

One of my friends brought us a bottle of Tauco Cap Meong from his hometown, Cianjur. Tauco is a soybean fermented that usually used for cooking. Although almost every day I am cooking, I never used tauco. Tauco is not familier for me who is come from East Java.

I browsed how to use tauco. Actually, I just mix it in a vegetables sauté or chicken. One time, I tried to cook chicken tauco. Surprisingly, my children loved it! Thus, now tauco is one of my regular ingredients for my dishes.

In fact, soybean fermented is familiar in my tongue. I used to eat tempeh, soy sauce (kecap), even miso. However, tauco is different. My first time taste tauco is in my own house with my cooking.

In the name of curiosity, I searched about Tauco Cap Meong. Actually, it was a legend tauco brand in Cianjur.

Tan Kei Hian who was originated from China, made tauco and sold in Cianjur since 1880. His son continued his business which was famous as Babah Tasma. Babah Tasma had a wife, Ny. Tasma.

Both of them made their own tauco. Tauco Babah Tasma tends to sweet just like the origin taste. Meanwhile, Ny. Tasma chose to adapt to local taste. Her tauco tends to salty.

For a while, both of them run the business together even had different tauco. One day, they separated and build their own tauco brand. Babah Tasma with Tauco Cap Gedong, while Ny. Tasma with Tauco Cap Meong. Since people prefer Tauco Ny. Tasma, Tauco Cap Gedong finally disappear.

Nowadays, Tauco Cap Meong still survive and run by fourth generation. Their market was spread to all over Indonesia and some go abroad.

They confess that there are no secret ingredients for Tauco Cap Meong. They just maintain the way tauco is made from day one. And you can see how it made by coming to his production house at Cijedil, Cugenang, Cianjur, West Java.

However, you can find Tauco Cap Meong everywhere, offline or online. Just visit https://taucocapmeong.com/#toko to find out more.

PS: I have a question while I saw the label. In Indonesia, ‘meong’ is the sound of cat. Why the logo is tiger? Later I found that ‘meong’ in Sundanese means tiger. So, it makes sense now.
