Laoban by Uncle Osh: Where the Bos Hangs Out
Couple month ago, we were at Bandung in the morning on a weekday. Actually, it was a business visit because my husband has an event in Bandung. Me and my two children accompanied him.
While waiting for my husband, I was looking for a place for breakfast. The event was held at Jl. Supratman Bandung. Thus, I found Laoban by Uncle Osh at Jl. Katamso no. 25 which only couple minutes to reach.
I knew many restaurants and food stalls in Bandung served breakfast with various menu and price. I choose this restaurant because the distance was close and the variation of the menu.
I went with my 9- and 6-years old children who liked to eat. They like noodle, toast, rice, and something sweet. Laoban by Uncle Osh has many menus and they open from 7 am to 9 pm.
We came around 8 am and all the menu was ready to serve. I liked their design interior. At front there was a picture of a smoking man holding a cup wearing white shirt. I thought I heard him said, “Chill, Bro!”
Other pictures inside and some mandarin writings made me felt like I was in Chinese food staller. They used green, red, brown, and white as the theme colour.
Later I knew, “laoban” was a Mandarin language meant boss. Thus, they greeted us with the capital letter on the wall “Selamat Datang Laoban” or “Welcome Boss”.
It was our first meal, so we ordered much food. We ordered chocolate and cheese toast, mie (noodle) Hainan, mie laksa, wonton mala, kopi (coffee) buter, coklat (chocolate) butter, and milo Thailand for the drink.
The noodles were great. My younger child like soft taste, so she chose mie Hainan. On the contrary, her brother like spicy taste. He chose mie laksa. No complaint about the noodle and also the toast. The drinks were acceptable.
I ordered wonton mala because I was curious with taste of mala. After watching Culinary Class War on Netflix, one of the chefs used mala for the dish and it became favorite. Mala is spicy ingredients from Sichuan, China.
The wonton filled with chicken mince wrapped with thin skin. It was soft and shocking. Mala gave spicy taste and cold sensation like mint, but different. Not to spicy if compared to bird’s eye chili (cabe rawit).
This restaurant was originally from Malang and became viral. The name Laoban by Uncle Osh was from the owner’s name, Kevin Osh. Nowadays, they have 50 outlets spread in Indonesia according to their social media.
I think many people (and me) like the concept and also the food. The most important is the price is affordable. I absolutely, will come to other branches.
