Taman Literasi Christina Martha Tiahahu: City Park and Library

Having a proper and free city park in Indonesia is a privilege. Although, I can say nowadays is better, especially in big city such as Jakarta, Bandung, or Surabaya. I always envy with parks in Singapore. There are many green public areas. All of them are clean, tidy, kids friendly, and of course FREE.

However, I can be proud of this park, Taman Literasi Christina Martha Tiahahu at Blok M Jakarta. A big city park that I dreamt about. Great architecture, wide, strategic, free, and there is a library! The last part is really great. I like to read and it is a dream that we can finally have a public library in great area.

I came to this park with my 2 children, 8 and 5 years old a couple months ago. We came in the weekdays morning and it was perfect time because it was quiet. The park is wide, so that my children enjoyed running everywhere. The weather was nice because so many trees. There were also play ground with rounded swing and simple wall climbing.

The main attraction for sure is the library. It is called Taman Literasi or Literacy Garden. The collections quite complete, from history, philosophy, literature, children story, etc. We can read on the couch, chair with tables, or just laying down on carpet. It was comfortable, therefore we stayed for a long time. The staff said there were very crowded in the weekend, so visitors should que. Lucky us!

Suddenly my little girl wants to (sorry) poo. Oh, I got confused where to go. Fortunately, the staff said there was a toilet beside this building. Oh, it was relief. The toilet was also clean.

Then we came back to the library. While we were reading, sometimes we can see MRT passing through above our head. Since this park is a part of MRT transit integrated area at Blok M station. And my children loved it! They even counted!

The name of this park is an independence heroine from Maluku, Martha Christina Tiahahu. The building was shaped like amphitheater and in the middle, there is a pond with stage. They made music or exhibition in that stage. This park actually was built at 1948 and inaugurated at 1955. Then, it revitalized at 2021.

After reading in library, we can hang out and eat in several cafes around the library. It was fun coming to this park. I hope there will be more green public space with literacy area in this country.
