Sunsun: Vintage and Homey Café Near Airlangga University

When I was in Singapore, I liked to a have a breakfast at hawker. It’s like a street food but in a proper way. It is Singaporean habit to have breakfast at it. They like to have kaya toast and eggs with coffee or tea O or Tarik.
While in Surabaya, I find a café with similar concept of Singaporean hawker. In the morning it is called Sunsun. While in the night, they flip the name board and change into Full Moon. Interesting! It opens from 6 am to 11 pm. Therefore, it fits from breakfast until dinner.
It is located near my kid’s school and Airlangga University at Jl. Karang Menur No.22, Surabaya. I always pass it every time I pick up and drop off my kid from school. It was really crowded in the afternoon with young people.

On an Independence Day, my kid had a ceremony at his school. He just needed to stay for a while at school. Voila! it is a good time to try Sunsun. Thus, we waited him there.
It is a big old house which give vintage and industrial vibe. We can seat indoor, terrace, or at the yard. They pasted vintage pictures or stickers on their wall. Some of the chairs are wooden chair, some are made from rocks and cements. It is like we come at our family’s or good neighbor to chat and hang out. So far from fancy café image.

We ordered kaya toast, milo, coffee O or black coffee, and Tarik coffee (milk coffee). Unfortunately, they did not have eggs in the menu. If they have, it is really Singaporean style. However, they provide some rice and noodle in the menu. It is complete menu, from snacks, meal, coffee, tea, and ice.
I love their kaya toast. Kaya is a jam made from sugar, butter and coconut milk. Although at first, I thought it is a jam made from srikaya fruit.
Their kaya is so creamy, but not too sweet. The bread is also thick, fluffy, smell and taste so good. The best kaya toast for Rp 14.000. Only add Rp 1.000, you can taste kaya toast with many cheeses topping. So satisfied!
This place is become one of my favorite places to hang out.
Pro tips: the best time to come is in the afternoon before sunset. Sit in the yard where you can see residential field. It is the best to hang out or just contemplate.
