Legendary “Depot” at Surabaya: Depot Sederhana a.k.a Gubeng Pojok
Since I was a little, my father used to ask me eat at this food stall. It is located near old Gubeng station at Surabaya beside Sahid Hotel. Yes, it is Depot Sederhana. Surabaya people knew it as Gubeng Pojok, because it is located in the corner (pojok) of Gubeng Station.
My father and his friends used to eat at this place since it is the hype place at that time. When he got married, he took us to this place. And this place officially becomes one of our favorite places to eat.
Years after I got married and have two kids, I came back to this place. And it is still there with so many adjustments. However, the vibe is still the same. It still simple, affordable, and provide varied menus. They have more than 20 food and beverages.
One changed is there are many loading trucks since it is next to logistic company. At first, I can not see the place because so many the trucks park at the yard. I thought it was moved or closed. But it is not. It is still there at the same corner.
It was there since 1974. Formerly, they only sold fried rice, noodle, and bihun (rice noodle). Then, it provided more menus like rawon, soto daging, soto ayam, gudeg, ayam penyet, lele penyet, krengsengan, pecel, nasi campur, etc. They focus on traditional food which are suggested from the customers.
We ordered fried rice, fried noodle, nasi campur, and nasi krengsengan daging. The fried rice is served with telur dadar (omelet) and chicken pieces. The taste is not changed! No wonder people always come back for the familiar taste.
I also like nasi campur (mixed rice). It is rice with vegetables, tempe, and chicken or meat. Full nutrition on one plate. The food did not disappointed. They maintain the flavor. It is like to come home.
They open 24 hours. Therefore, train passengers who came early morning or late night could eat in this place. Affordable price, varied menus, open 24 hours, and nice food are the reasons why this food stall survived.
