Trubus: Old Bakery in Yogyakarta

While our visiting at Toko Bubur Sukacita in Yogyakarta, I was interested in various bread and traditional snacks at their cashier table. They look delicious. Then, I read the label. It was “Trubus perusahan kue”.

I never heard about this bakery before since I live at Surabaya and moved to Jakarta. As I know, Trubus was the name of plant magazine and shop at Surabaya.

However, we bought some of their snacks. Roti sisir meses (pull apart bread with chocolate), roti ayam (chicken bread), bakpau ayam dan kacang merah (steamed bun with chicken and red bean), onde-onde (fried glutinous dumpling with mung bean paste and sesame seed), nagasari (steamed cake made from rice fluor filled with banana), and lumpia goreng (fried spring roll).

We bought a lot of their snacks for food supplies on the road while we went back home at Purwakarta. Almost all of them are good. My favorite was the spring roll. It was filled with young bamboo (rebung).

It was rarely, because nowadays most spring roll filled with vegetables, noodle, or smoked beef with mayonnaise. Rebung spring roll was really old school. It only found at some old sellers.

After I figured out, Trubus was a legend bakery in Yogyakarta. It had been established since 1958 and their best seller is the spring roll. In the center shop, there is a spring roll corner where customers can order the fresh spring roll. It is not only fried, but also the steamed one (lumpia basah).

The center of Trubus bakery and cake shop is at Jl. Poncowinatan No. 67-71, Cokrodiningratan, Jetis, Yogyakarta. Although, they also sold at some various places like at Sukacita. Formerly, they sold the bread with Tenongan.

Some ladies will bring a large container (tenongan) which full of bread. They sold around to houses. They wore colorful kebaya to make them stand out, so easy to recognize. They still do this now, but not many.

The owner of Trubus bakery was the grand parents of owner Toko Bubur Sukacita. “Trubus” is the name of the grandmother. It means tukul in Javanese or grow. They want the bakery to grow continuously. Thus, that is proven until now. That spirit also inspired the grandchild to open Toko Bubur Sukacita for continuing the family business.
