Digital Detox 101
Have you ever overwhelmed with your digital activity? Your brain is like burning out with so much information. You feel like less connected with your family, friends, or your surroundings. I think it is time to consider about digital detox.
Digital detox? Sounds scary! How about my job or study? My boss will angry if I don’t response quickly!
Relax! Digital detox does not mean you have to close or disconnect all of your digital activity. It is YOU who set the boundaries. How much time you will check your social media, set silent notification for some applications that not really needed, or simply not to see your phone 20 minutes before bed.
Small steps that matter to make a new habit. From that, you can increase as your comfort. One day you will realize that you build a new digital habit.
I think I am not really involved in my phone. I do not need digital detox!
It is true that only you can decide needing digital detox or not. However, you can check some of this sign’s weather you need it or not.

You always check your phone anytime and everywhere. No matter you are having a family conversation, or chill out in a café with your friends. You are like stick to your phone.
- You Feel Burnt Out and Unable to Focus
Too much information on your hands somehow makes you feel exhausted. You should sort many things to just know something simple. With many notifications sometimes make you can not finish your task. It makes you engage more with your phone.
- You’re Comparing Yourself to Others Online
It feels like never enough to be yourself. Any achievements can not make you satisfy because there will always be someone better in online world.
How to start?
Start small. For example: 20 minutes no phone before and after bed, checking social media 2 hours only after working or study, uninstall some applications, or just silent the notifications.
However, if you need something big to start and make a momentum, you can plan a digital detox destination. You just need to schedule a trip on your weekend to proof that you can live happily without your phone. Here is what you can do.
- Choose a secluded place
You can plan to have a trip to beach, mountain, farm, village, resort, camping, national park, or even island. It is better to choose a place without or limited internet connection. It is suit for you that looking for peacefulness and being ‘alone’.
- Find a new activity
The important thing for digital detox is to find other activities that replace attachment to the phone. You can select a specific trip for yoga, meditation, spa, or volunteering. Those kind activities make you busy and substitute your phone.
One more thing, any successful digital detox is personal. Some tricks perhaps work for others, but not for you. Therefore, you should consider your personality, preference, activities, and many more. Start SMALL and do it NOW!
