Museum Trip in Bandung

Part 1: Museum Pos Indonesia

Actually, museum is kids’ friendly tourist destination. Children at any age can visit a museum. Although not many museums in Indonesia are attractive for children. It is a sad fact, but we still enjoy it somehow.

When we accompany my husband business trip in Bandung, I have to think a destination that suitable for my 5- and 8-years old children. A destiny that reachable from our hotel so we can walk around but children are going to love it.

Therefore, I choose a hotel in Jalan Cimanuk which is near from 2 museums, Museum Pos Indonesia and Museum Geologi Bandung. Furthermore, this area is a heart of Bandung. There are many artistic and delicious cafes, historic building, and park. I think it is the perfect area for mom and children while waiting for my husband business trip.

We were coming early in a hotel. After putting our baggage to receptionist, we start our adventure. We walked through Jalan Cimanuk to Jalan Cilaki where Museum Pos Indonesia is located. It was not far and the weather was so good. Many high trees upon us. It was cool.

Formerly, the name of Museum Pos Indonesia is Post, Telephone, and Telegraph (PTT). It was built by Nederland in 1931. During war area this museum was neglected. Until 1983 Indonesia was taken over it and renamed as Museum Pos Indonesia. Nowadays, the museum was also an active Post Office.

Therefore, the collections are really precious. It has golden letters from Nusantara Kingdom Kings for Nederland Commander and Brigadier General. It was a historic witness how Kings were communicated with Nederland.

There were also golden letters from Nusantara Kingdoms Kings for Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles, England Brigadier General. Formerly those letters were collections of Britain Museum. It was hundred years old.

For philately, this museum also had many stamps from various countries and historic stamps. You will see many rare stamps. It was amazing for me, because I was philatelist when I was a child. I had pen friends and I liked to exchange stamps with them. This is so memorable.

We also could see old things from post office. Their uniforms, printing machine, postman bag, bike, or any other stuffs that were by postman from era to era.

I thought it would be boring for my children who did not know about letter and post office. Surprisingly, they enjoyed it. We discuss about the time when we should write a letter to communicate because there were no telephone or internet.

In their perspective, it was really hard back then. Because to get information, it needs more time and effort. I think this visit makes them more thankful that they live in this era, when everything so close and easy. They just swipe their fingers, and everything just pop up in front of them.
