Nostalgic Food: Pangsit Mie Ayam Jakarta dan Mie Ayam Yamin Cak Hendrat

At some point in your life, you might have some foods or sellers that became your favorite at that time. Then, you move on, simply to continue your life. You might move to another city or place. One day you just remember because you saw on social media about the food. And you became curious.
It happens to me. I studied at Faculty of Letter (Now Faculty of Humanities) Airlangga University Surabaya. In a break time, we used to eat at ‘Kantin Sastra’. It was a place where some food sellers were gathered by the faculty.
One of them was chicken noodle or Mie Ayam. Many students liked it, including me. In a lunch time, there were always a long line. Their customers were not only from our faculty, but from all university including graduated students.

After graduated and move to another city, I never heard about it. After about 20 years graduated, I came back to Surabaya. I rented a house near my faculty.
Couple months ago, my husband sent me a video from social media. We used to share video that interested for us, like culinary reviews, mental health, parenting, and so on. That video was about chicken noodle review which location was near us.
The highlight is, it used to sell at Faculty of Letter, my campus. Off course, I was curious. Then, I looked at gmaps. Surprisingly it was really near my house. It is located at Jl. Gubeng Jaya IX No. 18B Surabaya.
I immediately went there. It was a little difficult to find because it was located at small and unordered alleys. Finally, I can find it.

The seller was in front of a house. They cooked in the terrace and the food area was inside the house. On the banner it said “Pangsit Mie Ayam Jakarta dan Mie Ayam Yamin Cabang FIB Unair”. They proudly said it was branch of Linguistics Faculty at Airlangga University.
I ordered Mie ayam and Mie Ayam Yamin, the best seller. I took away. They used number to identify the line. We can choose the level of spiciness from level 1 to level 5. Level 1 will be 1-5 chilis and level 5 was 25-30 chilis. Wow, it was new. This did not exist at my campus era.
I chose level 1. Mie yamin used soy sauce (kecap), so taste was sweet. However, mie ayam tend to savory. Honestly, the taste is the same after years. Nevertheless, I do not really like the taste anymore. Too much MSG for my palate recently. However, I appreciate that they still exist until now.
